New Line to Make Gears of War
New Line Cinema has won the movie rights to develop an adapation of Microsoft and Epic Games' bestselling video game Gears of War. The game is about a world devastated by an alien invasion - creatures called "Locusts" - and a group of elite soliders who fight them in order to take back their planet. Though the story is only modestly revealed during the game, Epic created an extensive backstory in the hopes that it would be used for a movie and possible novels. The Xbox 360 game was the fourth biggest selling game in the U.S. in 2006 despite not being released until November and is the most popular title on Microsoft's Xbox Live online service. It has also won numerous critical awards. Stuart Beattie (Collateral) will be writing the script.
