Fox Buys Uglies
Twentieth Century Fox has obtained the film rights to young adult fantasy series Uglies, the first book in a trilogy from author Scott Westerfield. The story focuses on teen angst and the struggle over conformity and acceptance. Children are called "Uglies" until they reach their 16th birthday, when they get surgery to be transformed into "Pretties." One teen is threatened with not being allowed to have the operation unless she spies on a friend who skipped it in order to join a rebel group. Fox also bought the rights to the second and third books, Pretties and Specials. John and Jordan Davis will produce the film.
