Walden gets Tortoise pitch
Walden Media has acquired the pitch Tortoise and Hippo and has set Shrek co-writer Roger S.H. Schulman to write the screenplay. The movie will combine live-action and CGI animation and is based on an idea from Relevant Entertainment's Mike Menchel. It came to him when his daughter showed him a picture of a 100-year-old tortoise and a baby hippo that had bonded after they were rescued from the Indian Ocean after the devastating December 2004 tsunami. He developed the idea further, turning the tortoise into a cranky sort who initially only adopts the hippo because it is a chick magnet, but soon the pair are truly bonding.
