Vivaldi biopic in works
Independent production company Mechaniks is in development on a biopic of the tempestuous life of Antonio Vivaldi. The 18th century priest who later became a composer is now the subject of two such projects, as Columbia and Imagine Entertainment announced they were developing a similar story in the fall of 2004. The Mechaniks project is set to start on May 1, 2005 and will shoot on location in Italy and Austria. No director is attached; however, they do intend to work from a screenplay by Jeffrey Freedman, who has spent an extensive amount of time researching the composer. Mechaniks has entered discussions with folk-rock fiddler Ashley MacIsaac about playing the role of Vivaldi.
The movie will follow Vivaldi as a young priest, when he is assigned to be the music master at a school for the illegitimate daughters of Venice's courtesans. He suffers from extremely difficult bouts of asthma and is also undergoing a crisis of faith due to what he believes is the hypocrisy of the Catholic church. He becomes quite close to the girls he is teaching, and eventually they all work together to present a concert to the Pope.
