Paramount wins rights to Fighter
Paramount Pictures has beaten four of its rival studios to the rights to the boxing biopic The Fighter. The true story centers on two half brothers from Boston who offered the very best and the very worst that boxing can put out there. One of the brothers, Dicky Eklund, became addicted to drugs and turned to crime after a tough match with Sugar Ray Leonard. The other, "Irish" Mickey Ward, was a cult favorite, but dropped out to be a prison guard. After Eklund emerged from prison, he trained his younger brother to the IBO junior welterweight championship of the world. Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson will write the screenplay.
