Jackson wears Halo

Peter Jackson, director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, has signed to executive produce Halo along with his wife, Fran Walsh. He's not planning to direct the film, as his next project is scheduled to be The Lovely Bones; however, Weta Digital and Weta Workshop (which Jackson owns) will handle the production. Alex Garland is currently revising the screenplay. Jackson and Walsh will be involved in the script revision and will also consult on the film all the way through post-production.

Halo gets a date

Fox and Universal have finally closed a deal to adapt the hugely successful Microsoft videogame Halo into a tentpole franchise. The movie is planned for a Summer 2007 release and will have Universal handling production and domestic distribution, while Fox will handle the overseas sales. The studios will split the revenues 50/50. The studios came to a deal after Microsoft paid Alex Garland (28 Days Later) $1 million to write a screenplay. He's now set to do a rewrite with studio notes. At that point, Universal will look for a director for the project. Microsoft will get $5 million against 10% of the gross from the studios.
