DreamWorks ready to play Splinter Cell
DreamWorks is in advanced talks to acquire the movie rights for Tom Clancy's video game Splinter Cell, and will assign Daniel Pyne (The Manchurian Candidate) to write the screenplay. DreamWorks would take over the project from Paramount, where the project was initially set up last winter. Under that contract, Peter Berg (The Rundown) had been attached to direct, but since Paramount went through some upheaval with regards to management shifts, the project found itself in freefall. When the studio's holding deal dropped out, Berg dropped off the project and agreed to direct The Kingdom for Universal. Michael Ovitz, Clancy's manager, decided to repackage the project so that another studio might take it up.
Splinter Cell is now in a third edition and centers on government spy Sam Fisher. He is sent to infiltrate an international terrorist syndicate in order to prevent a high-tech threat. The games have sold more than 12 million units worldwide.
