New Line hires writer for Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

New Line Cinema has picked Christopher Hampton (Dangerous Liaisons) to adapt the Susanna Clarke fantasy novel Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. The story centers on a magician - the only practicing one in England - who finally emerges from his isolation and takes on an apprentice. Although Mr. Norrell agrees that their magical powers are worthy to be used in the assistance of their country in the battle against Napoleon, the pair are eventually pitted against one another. The book is quite an epic, in the vein of The Lord of the Rings.

New Line goes back to fantasy

New Line has acquired rights to adapt the Susanna Clarke novel Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell for the big screen. The studio is also close to approval of Chris Weitz's script for His Dark Materials and in development on Inkheart, a potential franchise based on the books of German author Cornelia Funke. Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, a bestselling fantasy novel in both the U.S. and Great Britain, is set in 19th century England and centers around a master practitioner of real magic and his apprentice. The pair share an uneasy alliance when they join their abilities for the war against Napoleon. Still, one of them goes too far and taps an alternate dimension that brings someone back from the dead.
