Dallas to Start Over, Drops Most of Cast

New Regency has made a decision to drop almost the entire cast of the feature film adapation of Dallas, with the exception of John Travolta who is still set as J.R. Ewing, the head of the filthy rich, dysfunctional Texas clan. Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham) is still tentatively set to direct, but will make a final decision once the new cast is on board. Among the actors who are now out are Luke Wilson (who was to play Bobby Ewing), Shirley MacLaine (Miss Ellie), and Meg Ryan (who was in negotiations to play Sue Ellen). Chadha was reportedly not happy about the cast, and focus group research agreed. Along with a new cast, New Regency is also still hoping to find a financial partner.

Luketic does Dallas

Regency Enterprises has hired Robert Luketic (Legally Blonde, Win a Date With Tad Hamilton!) to direct a theatrical update of the '80s television soap opera Dallas. The film would update the setting to the current-day, with J.R. Ewing scheming in a post-Enron environment. He's the head of the most powerful energy company in the world, and the backstabbing and plots for many of the original Dallas characters will feature heavily in the story. 20th Century Fox will distribute the film, and the screenplay was written by Robert Harling.
