Schumacher is in a Crowded Room

Joel Schumacher is set to direct The Crowded Room, a big-screen adaptation of the non-fiction book The Minds of Billy Milligan, by Daniel Keyes. It's based on the story of a man with 24 separate personalities. The movie's development has been going on for quite a period of time. Schumacher has nearly made it twice at other times. Additionally, numerous directors other than Schumacher have been attached throughout the project's history. James Cameron was the first director to option the film, doing so in 1998 with the intent of having John Cusack in the lead role. Then, David Fincher tried the project out with Brad Pitt as his star, Steven Soderbergh looked at it with Sean Penn attached, and Danny DeVito sought to film it with Leonardo DiCaprio. Other helmers who have been in the mix at some point include Nick Cassavetes, F. Gary Gray, Gus Van Sant, and Todd Field. Additional actors who have been interested in the lead were Johnny Depp and Matthew McConaughey. Now, Schumacher has taken the opportunity to return the film because it has always stayed with him. He had been planning a January shoot of the Patricia Cornwell novel Cruel and Unusual, but that has now been delayed in favor of The Crowded Room. The story centers around Billy Milligan, who at age 21 was arrested for rape. Doctors who worked with him discovered a multitude of personalities residing in his mind, ranging from a young female child to a Serb-Croatian immigrant. His illness was believed to be the result of childhood violence and sexual abuse by his father.
