Sheridan to direct Kurosawa remake
Jim Sheridan, who directed In America, has signed on to direct a remake of the 1952 Akira Kurosawa film Ikiru for DreamWorks. The film is being developed as a possible starring vehicle for Tom Hanks. The update of the drama was written by Richard Price, who wrote the novel Freedomland. The story centers around a low-level bureaucrat who finds that after working for 30 years in the same job, he has developed stomach cancer. He wants to make the most out of the remainder of his life as possible and seeks out decadent activities, though in the end he decides he wants to leave behind something more memorable.
