Woo and Yun-Fat to work on Chinese-language project

John Woo is planning his first Chinese-language film in over a decade, and Chow Yun-Fat has been offered the starring role. The War of the Red Cliff would reunite Woo and Yun-Fat after they worked together in 1992 on Hard-Boiled. The film, which is based on real historical events that occurred in China 1,700 years ago and is also partially based on a chapter in the popular novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, will begin production in 2006. The book is actually over 600 years old but is still extremely popular in its home country. At this point, if all goes according to plan, The War of the Red Cliff will be the most expensive film in Chinese cinematic history, as it is budgeted around $36 million. The current record holder is Zhang Yimou's Hero, which had a budget of $30 million. That film is set for North American release by Miramax this week.
