Triplets helmer to direct Despereaux
Sylvain Chomet, who directed the delightful Academy Award nominee The Triplets of Belleville, has signed on to direct Despereaux for Universal Pictures. The movie is based on the Kate DiCamillo children's book Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread. A screenwriter should be signed on pretty quickly.
Despereaux will tell the tale of a number of unlikely heroes: a mouse who likes reading books as opposed to eating them and the princess he loves, a clumsy servant girl who dreams of being a princess herself, and an unhappy rat who is devising a plan to leave the dank darkness of the dungeon where he resides. The book won the 2004 Newberry Medal for Children's literature and has been on the New York Times bestseller list since September
