Warner Bros. sets Beowulf in motion
Beowulf, one of the oldest poems in English literature, is being adapted into a big screen extravaganza by Warner Bros. The studio has hired Matthew Sands, a former SoHo art dealer with a background in art history, to write the script. It will be his first screenplay. The original poem was written in the eighth century and tells the story of Beowulf of the Geats, who is assigned to slay Grendel, a monster that has been attacking a Danish kingdom. Beowulf defeats Grendel, slays the monster's mother, and finally battles with a dragon. Sands sees the story as being part of the horror genre and in fact looks at it as the progenitor of all horror tales.
